In Nassau County, New York, Old Westbury Gardens is the name of the property that formerly belonged to the wealthy heir to the Phipps family fortune, industrialist John Shaffer Phipps. The house, which can be found in Old Westbury at 71 Old Westbury Road, was turned into a museum in 1959 after the owner purchased it. Tours are available from the months of April through October.

John Shaffer Phipps made a promise to his future wife, Margarita Grace, who was the daughter of successful businessman Michael P. Grace, that he would construct for her in the United States a property that was similar to her family's British residence at Battle Abbey, which was located in Battle, East Sussex, England. Construction on the estate began in 1903. 1906 was the year that Phipps, his wife, and their young children moved into their newly completed home.

There are a total of 23 rooms in the house known as Westbury House, which was created in the Carolean Revival style (also known as the Charles II style) by British designer George A. Crawley with assistance from American architect Grosvenor Atterbury. The entire property encompasses 160 acres.

The dining room features John Singer Sargent's picture of Mrs. Henry Phipps and Her Grandson Winston. The painting can be found on the wall. The name of the infant was Winston Guest, and Winston Churchill was the child's godfather.

Love Story, a movie released in 1970, depicted the family house of Oliver Barrett IV, a role that was played by Ryan O'Neal. The movie utilized scenes of the driveway as well as parts of the rooms on the ground floor. Other movies including "The Age of Innocence," "North by Northwest," "To Wong Foo, Wolf, Thanks for Everything!" and "Thanks for Everything!" were all filmed on the premises. American Gangster, Cruel Intentions, Julie Newmar, 8MM, Bernard and Doris, Hitch, and The Manchurian Candidate (2004) are some of the films that come to mind.

The setting was also utilized for the production of episodes of the television shows Pushing Daisies, Gossip Girl, and Royal Pains. Catherine Martin, Baz Luhrmann's wife and the film's production designer, used it as a source of inspiration for the Buchanan Estate, which was included in the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby that she directed. The Old Westbury Gardens is a well-known location for weddings.
