The Zero Stone Park and Gazebo in is a naturally formed rock formation in the small town of Stockton, Texas. It was not easy to access till this year when the community decided to build a gazebo and have other amenities as well. Located at 400 S Nelson St, Fort Stockton, TX 79735,at the end of a residential road, the park is only open during certain hours and under certain conditions. The community came together to build an accessible gazebo with ample parking spaces for visitors. The gazebo has been built around a large boulder that stands like a sentry at the entrance to the park. The boulder serves as its anchor and protects it from erosion so people coming from all sides can enjoy it safely. An accessible swing set, drinking fountain and trash cans were also built near the gazebo for convenience and safety reasons.
The park is not a public space, rather it is a place that happens to have a bit of nature in it. It is open from sunrise to sunset only and under certain conditions. The conditions play a major role in its usage. To start with, it is only open on weekdays between 5:30 am and 8 pm. On weekends it is open from 8 am to 5:30 pm. It is also only accessible during these hours and it is closed during certain other times. The gazebo is a great place to relax and spend time with your family and friends. But it is not just a place to sit and chat; it also has a few amenities available for the visitors. The drinking fountain is accessible and has a lever handle so people with disabilities can use it easily. There are plastic cups attached to the fountain so people can refill them easily, too. The trash can and garbage chute located close to the gazebo are also accessible. The trash can is a typical city trash can, while the garbage chute is a curved pipe that allows people with mobility issues to move the waste around easily.
The gazebo serves as the centre of activity for the park. You will find the swing set nearby, too. This is an accessible swing set, as it has a low swing that is suitable for people with mobility issues. It also has a bigger swing and a roundabout swing. There is a safety bar attached to the roundabout swing so people can be safe while enjoying it. There are also 2 elevated seats available for the visitors to hang around the park and have picnics or just have a lazy day.
The park has a drinking fountain that is also accessible. It is one of the standard drinking fountains that are available in most parks and public spaces. The lever handle makes it easy for people to use the drinking fountain. There is a sign with information about the drinking fountain and why it is there. This is how the sign looks like:
The trash can and garbage chute are located near the accessible gazebo, too. The garbage chute is slightly curved and allows people to move the waste around easily. The trash can is a typical city trash can, while the garbage chute is a curved pipe that allows people with mobility issues to move the waste around easily.
